Five Great Summer Skin Care Tips

Summer brings great weather, long weekends, exciting vacations and lots of terrific outdoor activities we all enjoy. There’s great backyard barbecues for family and friends. Languid laps in the pool and joyful frolics in the ocean. Surfing and sailing. And of course, splaying out on the beach with a cool drink, a great book, and soaking in the sun’s rays.

Fun, right? For you and your friends, sure. For your skin? Not so much.

Summer and the intense sun’s rays during the summer months are rough on the skin. There’s perspiration, dehydration, dangerous UVA and UVB rays. All of these can – and will – wreak havoc on your skin. So while it’s important to protect your skin year-round, you want to be especially careful during summer. Bearing that in mind, let’s talk about a few smart summer skin care tips to keep your skin healthy, radiant and safe. Your skin will thank you for it.

Summer Skin Care Tip #1: Stay Hydrated

Proper hydration is essential to our health, as it promotes muscle efficiency, cardiovascular health, aids digestion, and improves mental acuity. It’s also essential for our skin health (and remember: our skin is our largest organ).

Experts recommend a minimum of eight glasses of water a day—but in summer months, we might need more. And if you are someone who likes physical activity during these hot months—like lifting at the gym, a long afternoon hike, swimming, surfing—well, you and your skin will need a lot more than eight glasses of fluid a day.

The number one tip for summer skin care? Stay hydrated. If necessary, supplement your water intake with sports drinks like Gatorade, which contain electrolytes, but don’t turn to iced coffee or a cold soft drink for hydration. Bottled water may be fashionable, but it’s not necessary—simple filtered tap water is just fine for the body and has no harmful environmental impact!

Summer Skin Care Tip #2: Use A Gentle Cleanser

Summer brings extra perspiration and extra showering, which can dry out, irritate and prematurely age the skin. Which brings us to our second summer skin care tip: use a gentle cleanser. A good, gentle cleanser should rinse off easily, not require any scrubbing and leave your face and neck feeling smooth, clean and refreshed.

For dry skin, use a fragrance-free and alcohol-free cleanser; fragrance/dyes and alcohol will only dry your skin further. For oily skin, use an oil-free cleanser (such as a foaming facial cleanser). For sensitive skin, use a fragrance-free, alcohol-free, hypoallergenic cleanser. (These are inexpensive and easy to find in pretty much any drug store or pharmacy.)

Yes, you will need to wash your face and body more during the summer months, but this doesn’t have to mean more wear and tear (and irritation) for your skin.

Summer Skin Care Tip #3: Use a Moisturizer

Whether you are male or female, 18 or 80 – you must moisturize. Oil-free, fragrance-free and alcohol-free moisturizers are inexpensive, easily found and suitable for all skin types. Summer, however, demands extra moisturizing, due to the more intense summer sun’s rays, perspiration, and the wear and tear on our skin from summer activitie—such as swimming in the ocean’s salt water or doing laps in a chlorinated pool.

Don’t be stingy with moisturizer during these months. A good moisturizer routine prevents lines, wrinkles and premature aging. And, of course, helps you stave off sun damage.

Summer Skin Care Tip #4: Use an SPF

The sun’s rays are most intense during the summer months. Sun protection not only keeps our skin hydrated, it protects it by filtering out dangerous UVA and UVB rays. Exposure to the summer sun without protection can cause sun spots, lines and wrinkles, irritations and, in some cases, skin cancer.

Don’t shy away from SPF 30 or even higher. Many popular moisturizers now include SPF, which makes it even easier to both keep your skin moisturized and protected from the harmful rays of the sun.

Here’s an additional tip: try avoiding midday sun, when the sun’s rays are most intense.

Summer Skin Care Tip #5: Exfoliate

Exfoliators remove dead skin cells, unclog pores and can make skin look instantly rejuvenated. With all the wear and tear that summer brings to our skin – salt water, UVA and UVB rays, the wearing of additional products like sunblock – our pores can get clogged and blackheads and acne can result.

If you are prone to acne and breakouts, consider using a NeedCrystals microdermabrasion exfoliator with salicylic acid. This will not only reduce the appearance of acne scars, it will decrease breakouts and help give your skin a healthy, glowing appearance. The microdermabrasion crystals gently exfoliate, smooth away rough patches of uneven skin cells and deep clean pores.

You should also consider our microdermabrasion scrub with vitamin C. It exfoliates, revitalizes and can instantly boost your skin’s radiance. It contains powerful antioxidants to protect your skin from environmental damage and will slough away dead skin cells that cause uneven and rough skin texture.

In conclusion, don’t be afraid of the sun, but enjoy it responsibly. Hydration, gentle cleansing, sunblock, moisturizer and exfoliators all protect our skin – and our health – while helping to ensure a safe summer.
